Macao’s Basic Information

  • Located on the southeast coast of China and on the west coast of the Pearl River Estuary.
  • As of the third quarter of 2023, the total population was around 681,000 and the total population in employment was around 369,000, 45.2% of them have received higher education, indicating that the city has reached the level of developed regions in Asia in this aspect. 
  • Located in the East Asian monsoon region, it is hot and rainy in summer, sunny and fresh in autumn, and dry and fairly cold in winter.
  • In addition to Chinese, Portuguese is also used by the executive, legislative and judicial authorities and is also named an official language of Macao. Cantonese is used on a daily basis, and English is widely used in trade, tourism and commerce.
  • Macao is equipped with comprehensive infrastructure, extensive and efficient air, land and marine transport networks

Macau International Airport

  • As of the end of November 2023, the airport provided passenger flights to a total of 47 des-tinations, covering major cities in Mainland China, such as Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shang-hai, as well as international cities such as Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. The airport also provided 17 cargo flight routes, serving cities including Doha in Qatar, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Istanbul in Turkey

Macao Light Rapid Transit (LRT)

  • Macao Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system is the first rail transit system in Macao, and the LRT lines include Taipa Line, Taipa-Barra Extended Line, Seac Pai Van Line, East Line and Hengqin Extended Line.
  • Officially opened in December 2019, the 9.3-kilometre-long Taipa Line serves stations spanning major residential communities, old villages and tourist areas in the centre of Taipa. It also connects to the border ports. 
  • Since December 2023, the service of Taipa Line has been extended to Barra Station, marking the official connection of the LRT system between Taipa and Macao. 
  • LRT construction projects for the other lines are currently underway
